ESPN is reporting that Casey Mears may be out of Hendrick Motorsports’ No. 5 Chevy at the end of this season, despite having one more year left on his contract.
ESPN also reported that Mark Martin would be leaving the Dale Earnhardt Inc.’s No. 8 Chevy, which he currently shares with Aric Almirola. The plan is to have Almirola in the car full time next year.
ESPN says that it has learned that Martin will replace Mears in the No. 5 car to make one last run at a championship.
When asked about returning to Hendrick, Mears said:
I don’t know yet. Obviously, we haven’t had a good season. I think anything could happen. Right now, I don’t really have anything good to talk about.

I dunno … I can see Mark driving for Hendrick in a driver/mentor program with Brad Keselowski, but I don’t see him coming back full-time. If he was gonna make another run for the Cup, then he should’ve done it last year when he got off to such a great start.
