In a week in which the biggest story in NASCAR should have been Petty Enterprises taking on a partner to become more competitive, the news of a $225-million racial and gender discrimination lawsuit overshadowed every bit of news in NASCAR.
It absorbed every ounce of coverage NASCAR received.
The allegations, to some, are not surprising. For those who do not know the sport, they think that the allegations “sound true,” which, to them, means they are true.
To most of those who are fans of the sport, the allegations are not surprising. These fans are not naive enough to believe that what’s described in the suit couldn’t have happened. But, are they going to let it influence their opinion of the sport? Probably not.
The actions of a few do not make the whole organization bad, if the incidents did in fact occur. I think most fans realize that. So, in the end, people are going to make up the own minds about the sport. And, I say, let them.
As a fan, all I care about is the racing. So, as the series turns to Michigan, I, as a fan, hope to return to some sense of normalcy within the sport. No stories. No allegations. No lawsuit. Just racing.
