Is Hendrick Motorsports Sandbagging?

June 4, 2008

The Winston-Salem Journal is running an interesting article on Hendrick Motorsports’ perfomance this season. While Dale Earnhardt Jr. is third in the points, the team does not really have much to boast about this season.

The team’s only victory thus far came from Jimmie Johnson’s fuel mileage gamble at Phoenix International Raceway.

Last year, Hendrick dominated the competition, winning half of the season’s 36 races. And, all four teams won last year. So, what’s the difference this year?

Mike Mulhern writes:

Maybe they’re just sandbagging. Unless NASCAR provides bigger incentives for victories and leading laps, why push it that much during the regular season?

But, Johnson assures us that he is not:

I wish we were. But we don’t have the patience to hold anything back. We’re always set on kill. We’d love to start the season rock-solid, run the full season strong, without faltering, but these seasons are long and tough.
